The Benefits of Adventure Sports in Teen Residential Programs
Our Crossroads Residential short-term and Academy long-term teen treatment programs emphasize purposeful adventure living and the natural highs that replace risk-seeking behavior. We specialize in providing adventure-based recreation opportunities that allow the students to build self-confidence as they work toward increased mastery.
Being challenged both mentally and physically through adventure sports leads to an increased sense of self-determination, grit, and improved mental health. The mountains, climbing gym, skate park, and lake also make some of the best settings for break-throughs and individual sessions, and recreation is by far the best way for our therapists and trained staff to build the strong relationships needed to facilitate growth and change.
While recreational therapy is a huge aspect of our programs and what often sets us uniquely apart, prospective students do not have to be gifted athletes or have any experience to benefit from these activities. All students need is a willingness to participate and an openness to work on improving their skills. We have excellent instructors who will be able to teach the students at whatever level they may be starting at.
All students are required to wear the appropriate protective gear while participating in recreational therapy.
Recreation Opportunities
Skateboarding
All Crossroads residential treatment properties have skate ramps, rails, and boxes on-site. Students are also able to skate at our 9,000 SF Crossroads indoor skate park & shop before it opens to the public. There are 4 skate parks within an 8 mile radius, and 10 others within a 90 mile radius.
While students are not required to skateboard, it can definitely be a daily part of recreation for your son if he enjoys the sport.
Wakeboarding & Wakesurfing
Our Crossroads teen boy programs are located just 15 minutes away from Pineview Reservoir, where we have three Malibu boats docked in our boat slips. Students are able to go boating a couple of days a week for a few hours a day during the summer months.
Most of our students have had no previous experience with wakeboarding and wake surfing and will receive lessons from qualified instructors.
Snowboarding & Skiing
Students receive season passes to Snowbasin Ski Resort, a world-class ski destination and Winter Olympics venue. Snowbasin is located just 30 minutes from our properties and the students have the opportunity to go snowboarding/skiing 3-5 times a week for a few hours a day on weekdays, and all day on weekends throughout the winter and spring months if desired.
Mountain Biking
All Crossroads teen residential treatment programs are located in Ogden, an ideal area for mountain biking. We have numerous beautiful trails within 30 minutes of our properties. We also take bikes on many of our monthly excursions, to places of incredible natural beauty — it’s hard to beat biking on the red rock trails of southern Utah.
Rock Climbing
Many of the students enjoy rock climbing so much that we have made it a regular activity the teens can participate in a few times a week. Ogden has one of the top climbing gyms in Utah, as well as some incredible outdoor bouldering locations. Some of our students have even participated on competitive climbing teams.
Gym
Crossroads Academy long-term program students receive memberships at the local EoS Fitness where they can go to work out, swim, and play basketball or racquetball. They are able to go to the gym on almost a daily basis. Our staff help the students plan their workout regimen and make the most of their time at the gym.
Crossroads Residential short-term program students have access to SOAR gym, a 12-Step facility that students participate in 3 times a week.
Team Sports
Our goal is to support our students in finding healthy passions. For the long-term program boys that enjoy competitive team sports, we will do all that we can to help facilitate these opportunities. We have had students play on club soccer and hockey teams, as well as local high school teams—tennis, lacrosse, and football.
Short-term program students do not participate in team sports but will have an abundance of other recreational opportunities to choose from.
Programs
We have created a unique environment that emphasizes autonomy and purposeful living. As an established leader in teenage treatment, Crossroads Residential and Academy programs have set the standard for adventure and recreation in a treatment environment.
Our Approach
Recovery work with teens is most effective using a relationship-based approach and recreational therapies to build that connection. Crossroads has set the standard for adventure sports in a treatment setting, in conjunction with a diverse range of therapies and academic intervention.
